What is Yoga?
Over 6,000 years old, Yoga is a science of self-improvement for both the body and mind.
A sage by the name of Patanjali recorded the Yoga Sutras at some point during the first
three centuries CE. The Yoga Sutras have inspired the various Yoga practices that have
become popular here in the West.
Hatha Yoga, the Yoga of physical well-being, was born sometime during the ninth or tenth
century. This form of Yoga focuses on breathing, postures that strengthen and stretch
your body, and relaxation. Hatha Yoga is universal and everyone can enjoy its unlimited
benefits. Excellent for all ages and all levels of fitness, Hatha Yoga was designed to
bring health and balance to all systems of the body.
Yoga is a practice that you can cherish on and off the mat. It’s also a great way to
get the exercise you need to help you maintain good health and vitality. Plus, it’s fun!
Is Yoga a religion?
Yoga serves people of all faiths and beliefs, thus it is not a religion. It is a practice that
helps us to tune into our physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Different people come to the
mat for different reasons. Yoga is a systematic approach to self- improvement that blends the
rhythm of the breath with the asanas, or physical postures. Yoga encourages us to look within
ourselves and to grow in compassion for the world around us.
Can Yoga help me to lose weight?
Many studies have shown Yoga to be an excellent way to lose weight. For one thing, you sweat and you get
the exercise your body needs. On another note, the practice of Yoga motivates deeper body awareness, so
many people naturally are inspired to eat more healthfully and become more active.
What do I need to wear/bring to Yoga class?
Wear comfortable, athletic clothes that you can easily move around in. Many students prefer to wear
layers because the body tends to warm up during the asanas (postures) and cool down during relaxation.
You will practice barefoot on your mat—you can bring your own or you may use one of ours. It’s good
to bring water and a small towel.
Should I practice Yoga if I have health issues?
Yoga can benefit everyone. When you arrive for your first class, you will be asked to fill out a
health background form so that your instructor is aware of anything that he/she should know for class.
You can also call the studio to ask specific questions or to inquire about classes. For every posture,
there is a modification. Your instructor will mention any contraindications that a pose might have.
At Tree Frog Yoga, we are committed to sharing the benefits of Yoga with everyone. Let us know about any health issues you might have and feel free to contact us with questions or concerns—we will do our best to help you make Yoga a part of your life. We highly recommend that you check with your family physician before beginning your Yoga practice.
